Η Διά Βίου Εκπαίδευση παραπέμπει σε μια ολιστική προσέγγιση του συνόλου των μαθησιακών και εκπαιδευτικών δραστηριοτήτων με γνώμονα τη συγκρότησή τους σε ένα ενιαίο σύνολο, σε ένα συνεχές στον χώρο και τον χρόνο. Η σύγχρονη ερευνητική ατζέντα της διά βίου εκπαίδευσης περιλαμβάνει ζητήματα όπως η συνεχής αναδιαμόρφωση του ανθρώπου μέσω της μάθησης και της εκπαίδευσης, οι διεργασίες μετασχηματισμού αντιλήψεων και πεποιθήσεων, η συσχέτιση των επιμέρους υποσυστημάτων τυπικής, μη τυπικής και άτυπης εκπαίδευσης, καθώς επίσης και οι προϋποθέσεις συμμετοχής του πολίτη σε εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες.

Το Εργαστήριο Παιδαγωγικών Ερευνών και Επιμόρφωσης του Τμήματος Επιστημών της Εκπαίδευσης και της Αγωγής στην Προσχολική Ηλικία του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών είναι ένα από τα πρώτα ερευνητικά εργαστήρια σε παιδαγωγικά τμήματα καθώς ιδρύθηκε το 1996 ως Εργαστήριο Παιδαγωγικών Ερευνών και Εφαρμογών. Είκοσι χρόνια αργότερα αποφασίστηκε η μετονομασία του Εργαστηρίου προκειμένου να αποτυπώνονται καλύτερα οι ερευνητικοί προσανατολισμοί των μελών και οι ερευνητικές και αναπτυξιακές του δραστηριότητες. Με το ΦΕΚ 900Β/4-4-2016 μετονομάστηκε σε Εργαστήριο Παιδαγωγικών Ερευνών και Επιμόρφωσης (Laboratory of Pedagogical Research and Lifelong Education).
